A unique and fascinating gemstone, the opal has long been admired for its variety of spellbinding colours as well as its unmistakeable beauty. The majority of opals are cut into cabochons (a ‘domed’ cut with a flat base) as opposed to the faceted nature of other gems, with the exception of the stunning “Fire Opal” which is a red or orange colour. The finest examples of opals are mined in the Lightning Ridge area of Queensland, Australia, whereas the finest Fire Opals are generally mined in Mexico.
