"Mohs" Scale...
When purchasing an item of jewellery, it is important to consider how suitable a gemstone is (for every-day use or for use on special occasions only). All gemstones are beautiful but some are “softer” than others so may be too soft for constant wear and in some situations.
The ‘Mohs’ scale of hardness in gemstones is the tool to refer to when making a decision about which gemstone(s) best suit your lifestyle. Graded from the softest (1) to the hardest (10), it was created using a simple measure of one gem’s ability to visibly scratch another. It is important to remember that this is not a linear scale – it is a relative scale based on the scratch hardness of a gemstone. For example, diamonds score 10 on the scale but are many times harder than sapphire and ruby, which are a 9. The scale is illustrated below with examples of some common objects to give perspective:
